July 1, 2014 Speaker: Stephen Wilson, Ph.D., “Life Without Disease: Unleashing the Power of Our Immune System to Keep Us Healthy”

Steve WilsonThe study of immunology has emerged as the frontrunner of exciting medical research, with more and more studies suggesting it holds the key to solving most diseases that impact human health, even those we haven’t historically associated with immune issues. In fact, on the list of top 10 causes of death in the United States released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 7 of the top causes of death are caused by immune system malfunction or could be cured by the immune system:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Heart Disease
  • Asthma
  • Influenza
  • Nephritis
  • Alzheimer’s Disease

In his presentation, Dr. Wilson will describe the goals of immune system research and how it is bringing forth interventions in health and medicine that will help people live better lives. Dr. Wilson will share concrete examples of how the aim of “Life Without Disease” is being tackled and how this area of research is even altering the way we look at the possibilities for our future: each of us living long lives without symptoms associated with diseases such as autoimmune disorders, infection, heart disease, and cancer.

Dr. Stephen Wilson is Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of the La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology.

In addition to overseeing all Institute operations, finance, and core scientific facilities, he is also the Project Director of the Immune Epitope Database (a national resource of the National Institutes of Health) and Executive Director of the Institute’s RNA Interference
Center (a high throughput genomics facility).

Before joining LJI in 1997 Dr. Wilson trained in basic medical research. He was a research fellow of both the National Institutes of Health and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society where he studied the immunologic basis of autoimmune disease. He holds a B.S.A. in Microbiology and a Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Arizona’s School of Medicine.
