A Few Highlights from our Club Meeting:

wh-4p-rgb

  • Welcome and Introductions:  President-elect Ken King, filling in for President Lora Fisher, welcomed club members and guests to today’s meeting.
  • Invocation: Pat Stouffer noted “Some people make things happen. Some people watch things happen. And then there are those who wonder, ‘What the hell just happened?” When you’re a Rotarian, you make things happen.
  • Pledge: Leanne Hull MacDougall led the pledge
  • Song: Betty Dow chose a story over song. She shared a tale about Julia Child, who upon dropping the roasted turkey in front of her dinner guests one Thanksgiving, picked it up and said she’d be right back with the second turkey she had in the kitchen. (And in so doing, gave a generation of home chefs confidence and more than a few good lines!)

Visitors:

President Elect Ken King and Fellow Club Members Welcomed:

  • Evelyn Nelson, third-year medical student at UCSD, attended as a guest of Dr. Jane Reldan.

Happy Bucks:

  • Wade Aschbrenner was happy to announce that The Charter School of San Diego is one of four recipients of the 2015 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the nation’s highest Presidential honor for performance excellence through innovation, improvement and visionary leadership. The Charter School of San Diego is the first charter school and the first secondary school in the nation to win the highly coveted Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.  Past education winners have been colleges, universities, districts or entire school systems.
  • Gwyn Jones was happy to announce that his son Rhys Jones and the University City High School marching band placed fifth out of 14 bands in the all Southern California marching band competition.
Leanne
Leanne Hull MacDougall
  • Leanne Hull MacDougall paid Happy Bucks in announcing that she has been asked to be a delegate at the Democratic convention.
  • Claire Reiss – apparently sensing the inevitable — voluntarily fined herself for appearing in yet another newspaper photo.
  • Jane Reldan is sleepless in San Diego thanks to Rotarian Michael Sedloff’s new novel, Bella Will Rally, which Jane says is hard to put down. Jane also fined herself for appearing in the pages of last week’s La Jolla Light, when she and other members of an advisory group to La Jolla Parks & Beaches were presented with a check for $8,500 from the La Jolla Community Foundation for the Whale View Point project. The project is a multi-year undertaking to beautify and preserve the coastline along Coast Boulevard.
  • David Shaw gave Happy Bucks to announce that Mercy Hospital’s recent benefit was a grand success, attracting more than 600 guests.
  • After Ken King egged on the crowd to donate more to make President Lora Fisher proud and to fill the club coffers, Chuck Marsh donated $20 in honor of Lora.

Announcements:

  • Cindy Goodman, on behalf of Laurnie Durisoe, says that Laurnie still needs volunteers to help set-up the USO event on Thanksgiving Day. Set-up is from 9:00 am-12:00 noon, leaving plenty of time to return home to share dinner with friends and family. The USO is at 3rd and “A” Streets downtown and parking on holidays is free!
  • Ellen Kardashian let members know that the deadline to sign-up for the December 1st Rotary holiday party is November 25. To date, 94 guests are attending. The party will include a silent auction for the first time. Ten items have been received for auction and Ellen is hoping for a few more. Among the auction items are overnight stays at La Valencia, courtesy of Mark Dibella, and the Pantai Inn, courtesy of Laurnie Durisoe. If you have an item to donate to the silent auction, contact Ellen at: ellen.kardashian@stewart.com
Sally Fuller shows off her latest jewelry addition.

  • Will Creekmur spoke about the Paul Harris Fellow award that recognizes individuals who contribute, or who have had contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. The Foundation uses these funds to promote literacy, provide clean water, help expectant mothers, and treat and/or prevent disease throughout the world. Six club members were presented with Paul Harris Fellow medallions at today’s meeting: Sally Fuller, Don Lincoln, Ted Rutter, Chuck Dick, Charles Hartford, and Camille McKinnie.
  • Pat Stouffer gave an update on the club’s trip to Haiti in early March. Fourteen people have signed up thus far. With the trip just about 90-days away, Pat encouraged Rotarians who are interested to book their airfare soon, and contact him about travel arrangements.

Pat Stouffer updates members of the Haiti Chicken Coop Team ( HCCT) on travel plans for next year’s trip.
  • Gwyn Jones says the Salvation Army still needs a few more volunteers to put together gift boxes for needy families on December 5 and December 12. Also, he will be looking for “bell ringers” to ring the Salvation Army bell outside of the Von’s supermarket on December 19th.
  • John Trifiletti reminded members of the Holiday Sing-Along at League House on December 10, encouraging all to attend to get into the spirit of the season.

 ETHICS PUZZLERS

Ken King introduced Past President Russell King for a change of pace from our usual speaker format to discuss ethics. By nature, said Russell, Rotary is an ethical organization – a group whose members adhere to ethical practices as individuals and as business people. But the ethical choice in every circumstance is not always easy to discern.

To put our ethical reasoning to the challenge, a different ethical question was distributed to each table to discuss among its members. Each “team” then reported back to the club their table’s conclusions and reasoning.

photo 3
An “Ethics Slam” question.

Lively discussion was prompted by questions dealing with a range of ethical conundrums such as: would you break the law by stealing to feed a starving child? Is a drunk driver’s behavior more or less ethical if that behavior results in a death? Is giving a placebo to a patient who doesn’t need treatment– but thinks he/she does — ethical?

photo 2
Dr. David Shaw explains his team’s decision.

Six such questions were gamely debated at each table, with more debate spilling out to all club members upon presentation. Clearly, stretching the brain muscles was enjoyed by all.

E.Nelson-med student
Evelyn Nelson, a third-year medical student, shared her thoughts on giving patients placebos

Some tables were divided on their answers, and many additional opinions were voiced in subsequent discussions. Past President and longtime Rotarian David Weston wrapped up the meeting with the observation that , “This is the first time in club history in which each physician in the room spoke, and no attorneys spoke.

Meeting adjourned.

Save the Date!

Helmut Hatzinger’s grand children

Mark your calendars for the Rotary Christmas Party on Tuesday, December 1st from 5-10pm at the La Valencia. The club will be dark for lunch.

Ellen Kardashian placed sign-up sheets on tables so members could RSVP for the club’s annual Holiday Party, Tuesday, December 1, from 5:00-10:00pm. There will be no lunch meeting that date.

Once again, the Jolly Olde Elf has made time in his schedule to drop by our party. If you would like Santa to visit with a child or grandchild during the party and share an early gift, make sure to bring that gift to Tuesday’s meeting. It should be wrapped and clearly labeled with the recipient’s name, otherwise Santa gets to keep it.

La V will also be having its traditional Christmas Carolers and Christmas tree lighting.

Ellen also requests donations for the party’s silent auction. Contact her if you have an item, gift card or other donation: ellen.kardashian@stewart.com

Clubs: Mentor New Members

When Anna Harry relocated to Evergreen, Colo., she knew no one. But her father, George Harry, a member of the Rotary Club of Cary-Page, N.C., had a plan. While he was in town to help her move, he took her along to a make-up meeting at the Rotary Club of Evergreen. Three weeks later, she was a member.

But after her father had gone back home to North Carolina, Harry was nervous about attending a meeting on her own. Would people talk to her? Would she be able to make friends and get involved? What she didn’t know was that the Evergreen club has had an almost fanatical commitment to new member engagement for more than 18 years. It was ready for her.

“I felt a little lost,” she remembers of that meeting in November 2013, shortly after her 31st birthday. “But they swooped in and made me feel like an asset to the club right away.” She had already been assigned a mentor, who introduced her to members and sat with her at meetings. Other people in the 105-member club talked to her about upcoming opportunities – Salvation Army bell ringing, holiday parties, and more. “Immediately, I had dinner plans at the club’s weekend ‘dine around.’ The socializing – bringing me in and feeding me – was the most wonderful thing.”

Speaker: November 24th, 2015: Russ King

IMG_20151006_125240951There are many traits that are part of being a good Rotarian; one of them is ethics.  As Rotarians we have the 4-way test which gives us a pathway to evaluate situations and support good ethical behavior.

As a fun way to highlight the ethics of our members we will be having an ethics slam during our program on November 24.  Attendees will be working in teams to dissect some ethically challenging questions.  At the end of the program each group will report on their decisions and how they reached them.  This program was inspired by Jennifer Conlin’s August 2013 article in Rotarian Magazine.

Along with 300 other Rotarians Cindy, Bill and Foundation Chair, Will Creekmur spent four never-boring hours learning about many Rotary projects under way. As Bill put it, it was a great reminder that, “Rotary is really all about doing good and fighting evil!”

Advanced Students using new Big Screen TV to view Skype communication for lesson

Quiz Bowl:

IMG_6241 IMG_6251

It’s apparently not enough for Cal Mann to come back and visit his club, he just can’t stop shining a light on local high school students. Guests of Cal attending our meeting were three members of La Jolla High School Quiz Bowl,  Vincent Doehr (2016), James Malouf (2017) & Sabrina Duong (2018).   James and Vincent were members of the team that competed in the May 2015 National QB tournament.

According to Cal, Quiz Bowl has been described as Jeopardy on steroids. Two teams of three-to-four players compete to answer questions related to history, literature, science, math, sports, popular culture and more.  Points are won for each correctly answered question, and wrong answers result in a subtraction of points.   Quiz bowl competitions are held at middle schools, high schools and colleges.   LJHS Quiz Bowl team regularly competes at the annual national high school tournament.

Since the students were available, Lora thought it would be entertaining to have a mini-tournament to demonstrate what a Quiz Bowl tournament looks like.

The LJHS Quiz Bowl Team was pitted against four brainiac Rotarians: Chuck Dick, Susan Farrell, Chuck Marsh and Leanne Hull  Playing the role of scorekeepers were Ted Rutter & Bill Burch.

IMG_0022           IMG_0024

Each team was given noisemakers (either a kazoo or a confetti popper) and the scorekeepers were equipped with holiday hats as well as scorekeeping pads.

Moderator Cal provided a brief summary of the rules and asked a practice question so everyone could understand the pyramidal construction of the questions.

After a swift round of nine questions and a valiant effort by all concerned, the final score: LJHS Vikings 30 RCLJ Rotarians 10.  Rematch plans are already in place.

SPEAKER: Captain Terry Masango of Salvation Army

Captain Terry Masango of Salvation Army’s El Cajon office spoke about serving a large population of immigrants in that city, including the second-largest population in t he U.S. of Chaldean expatriates from Iraq.

He said the SA commissioned a survey to determine how it could better serve the immigrant population. They found that Chaldeans were mostly Coptic Christians and Catholics, with overwhelming need. He described the many services that Salvation Army provides, including Family Services, Food assistance, rent and utility assistance, after-school programs and other services for children.

As an immigrant himself (from Zimbabwe), Captain Masango mentioned how most immigrants come from countries where there is not a social support system, so they expect to work hard when they immigrate. Most Iraqi Chaldean immigrants speak Arabic or Chaldean, but not English, which increases their difficulty adapting to our country. However, Captain Terry said they had a growing number of success stories, including that of a former Iraqi pharmacist, who successfully went back to school in the U.S., graduated at the top of her class, and is now working as a pharmacist in El Cajon.

Guesses from last weeks contest were made by Bill Burch, Pat Stouffer and John Hoss.  Both Pat and John narrowed the Rotarian down to David Shaw, but neither could figure out the location.  The correct answer is David Shaw with three generations of Shaws rafting down Rio Balsa in Costa Rica.  John was the closest by answering  “The Amazon River with a boatload of cannibals in the raft behind him”. MEMBER INTERVIEW: COLOMBIAN CLUB’S SUPPORT FOR HOSPITAL SPANS DECADES

The Rotary Club of Cartagena, Colombia, has worked to bring health care to poor children for almost seven decades. Most recently, with support from a Rotary Foundation Global Grant and Rotarians around the world, the club has obtained more than $200,000 to provide pediatric cardiac care. Past club president German Spicker rounded up funds from Switzerland to Japan to help make it all happen.

THE ROTARIAN: Tell us about your city.

SPICKER: Cartagena is a city of contrasts. You find beautiful places that look like Miami Beach. But much of our population lives in poverty. The poorest people live in wooden homes, about 10 or 12 people together with no running water. Many don’t eat three meals a day; they have one or two meals. They are in bad health conditions.

TR: How does your club help those people?

SPICKER: In 1947, a member of the Rotary Club of Cartagena founded the Hospital Infantil Napoleón Franco Pareja to serve the children of the city. It is known as La Casa del Niño, the Children’s Home. The hospital never says no to anyone. It helps close to 80,000 children yearly.

In 2013, one of our past club presidents, Jaime Trucco Lemaitre – he is a pediatrician at the hospital – invited us to help with the New Heart Project, which would provide specialized equipment for an operating room for children’s heart surgery. Children with congenital heart disease had to be taken by plane to Bogotá or Medellín, and in most cases, they died, because time was critical.

Lora Fisher called Ellen Kardashian to the front of the room to receive her Blue Badge. Lora noted that, during the short time Ellen has been a member of the club, she has shown “tremendous energy, community spirit and willingness to not only help out, but to lead.” Laurnie Durisoe, Ellen’s Rotary sponsor and mentor, joined the two for photo opportunities.

Happy Bucks:

IMG_6213

  • Gwyn Jones thanks the Rotary members who have signed up or already volunteered to help with the Salvation Army’s Holiday Drive at the location he serves in Clairemont. That location alone will serve 400 families (including about 3,000 children) this Christmas with food and gifts. The big crunch will come on December 5 and 12 when volunteers are needed to sort through the thousands of toys and food items to create gift boxes for the families. Those interested should sign up or contact Gwyn.
  • Visitor Joyce Dostart shared her happiness to be a guest of Betty Dow and to see her friend Lora Fisher officiate as President of the club.
  • Gabriella Musgrove shared that her son lost his first tooth last night, and asked the club’s counsel on the proper tooth fairy reward. Much debate ensued without consensus other than $20 is too much!
  • Lora Fisher paid happy bucks to bring to the attention of members that not only is Betty Dow the club’s oldest member and youngest at heart, but that for the past few meetings, she has been without the aid of her wheelchair, scooting around with a walker. We’re all happy to see Betty’s strong recovery   from her accident.
  • Laurnie Durisoe is happy to be helping with a fundraising event called “Dancing With the Stars” to benefit San Diego Police officers. She announced that Rotarian Claire Reiss will be one of the dancers!
  • Ed Mracek was happy to announce that he’d made a career move, and now can be found at the La Jolla office of Pacific Sotheby’s – directly across the street from the La V. Ed was also happy to point out that his new office will occupy the site of the former Victoria’s Secret.
  • Chuck Marsh paid happy bucks to announce that today was the 230th birthday of the United States Marine Corps –oooh-rah!!
  • Jane Reldon brought to the club’s attention that Ed Mracek’s photo was in the La Jolla Light and he, therefore, should be fined. Ed gave the Wheel of Misfortune a good spin, landing on $50 for the club.

Announcements:

  • Charles Hartford reminded the club that Veteran’s Day is tomorrow. As a tribute to those veterans in our midst, he asked women and men veterans in the club to stand and be recognized for their service to the country.
  • Laurnie Durisoe reminded the club of the upcoming USO event on Thanksgiving Day. She thanked Rotarians who had already signed up to help, and noted more volunteers are needed for decorating and set-up before the event. Two food serving shifts are available: 9:00am-12:00noon and 12noon-3:00pm. Contact Laurnie to help out.
  • Charles Hartford gave an update on the Tijuana Home Build project reminding the club that the 24th Home Build will be this Saturday, November 14th. Volunteers and students from Interact will leave San Diego for Tijuana at 5:30am to build a home for the Gonzalez family. Hygiene items such as soap, toothbrushes, etc., are still needed and can be dropped off before Saturday at Charles’ office: Merrill Lynch, 7825 Fay Avenue, Ste 300, La Jolla.
  • Will Creekmur reminded members that there is another Rotary event on Saturday, November 14th from 8:00am-12noon: the District Foundation Seminar, “Celebrating the Power of Rotary.” The District Foundation will be recognizing the various clubs, including Rotary Club of La Jolla, for the good work being done by clubs in our district. The seminar will be followed with tacos and beer.
  • Ellen Kardashian asked club members to “Save the Date” for our club’s Holiday Party: Tuesday, December 1, from 5:00-10:00pm. There will be no lunch meeting that date. Ellen also requests donations for the party’s silent auction. Contact Ellen if you have an item, gift card or other donation: ellen.kardashian@stewart.com

Speaker:

SPEAKER: MARC TAYER, author of “Televisionaries”

Ken King introduced today’s speaker, Marc Tayer, who recently released a book about San Diego’s pioneering role in the digital TV industry. Tayer began by noting that digital TV was invented in San Diego 25 years ago by General Instruments – an offshoot of another digital technology pioneer, Linkabit (founded by Irwin Jacobs and Andrew Viterbi). At the time, there was much worry in Europe and the U.S. about Japan’s emergence as a super power and, for the tech community, as a frontrunner in HDTV. Despite huge investments in development, Europe and Japan were basing their inventions on “real world” analog technology. General Instruments, led by Jerry Heller, had a better idea for developing HDTV – digital technology. Benefits and benchmarks of digital TV technology:

  • Consumers could use existing TV sets
  • Proliferation of content. Digital allowed a 10:1 increase in content, opening the door for specialized channels
  • Created competition for cable companies, who, prior to 1994, had 95% of market.
  • Enabled development of DVRs, shifting power to consumers who were no longer tied to scheduled programming

Upcoming trends include:

  • 4X resolution improvement over current HDTV
  • Increase in “cord cutting” where consumers can buy services directly through broadband connections
  • Smaller, more a la carte, offerings for consumers by service providers

Save the Date!

Where In The World is this Rotarian and who is he or she? Be the first to indentify your fellow Rotarian and the location to win.  Please send your answer to mahalosu@gmail.com.

Burch Family 10 2012 VermontBoth David Shaw and John Hoss identified Bill burch and his lovely family. But neither could pinpoint the exact location. They were in High Falls Gorge, in the Adirondacks, Wilmington, NY.
In order, Henry, Shirley, Bill, & Will Burch.

If you have an interesting travel photo of yourself in a recognizable destination you would like to submit for the game please send it to: mahalosu@gmail.com. Photos do not have to be recent, older pictures are welcome!  All submissions will be considered, international and domestic! May the best globetrotter win!

Please keep the photographs coming, recent or not, in far distance places or not . . . La Jolla Rotarians go to interesting places and do interesting things, and it is fun (and sometimes challenging) for us to keep up with each other’s doings.

November 2015 Edition

Culture: Is Self-Publishing wishful Inking?

Several years ago, I got an idea for a book, one so strange that I naturally became obsessed with it. The manuscript would consist of 30 one-page essays on the craft of writing, and 30 one-page stories. I had a title all picked out: This Won’t Take But a Minute, Honey.

I was terribly excited about Minute, Honey, which I fancied as a kind of Strunk and White for the post-modern set. And thus I set about pitching it to editors at various New York publishing houses. To call their reaction negative would be overstating the case. They were simply bewildered.

So was I.

I had published five books at that point, all with well-regarded New York houses. I couldn’t imagine how to put out a book without the help of a publisher. At the same time, I was too excited about the project to let it go.

One night I was at a party, rhapsodizing about my brilliant little book that nobody wanted to publish, when a friend of mine mentioned that a local bookstore had just installed something called an Espresso Book Machine. A week later, I was standing next to what looked like a giant see-through copier, watching a red laser spray ink onto blank pages. Within minutes, the inaugural copy of This Won’t Take But a Minute, Honey slid down a small chute. I picked it up. The cover was still warm, the ink still sticky. It was a little like holding a newborn.

A Few Highlights from our Club Meeting:

IMG_0082

wh-4p-rgb

  • Welcome and Introductions:  Meeting called to order by President Lora Fisher, noting that there is no better place to spend a Tuesday at lunch than with your friends at the La Jolla Rotary Club.
  • Invocation: David Shaw: “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by “I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat, I was naked, and you clothed me.  I was homeless, and you took me in.” – Mother Teresa
  • Pledge: Eileen Jolly
  • Song: Jane Reldan, in acknowledgment of the day’s weather, “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Visitors:

President Lora Fisher and Fellow Club Members Welcomed:

  • Kazuko Matsuda and Jack Yuichi Iwaki, neighbors and guests of Nancy Gardner.

Happy Bucks:

  • Bob Schroeder happily announced that his son Carl, (he of the numerous restaurants around town) has written a book in his spare time that will debut tonight.  Carl Schroeder is a renowned chef and has written – to no one’s surprise — a new cookbook. Bob then announced that the SD Aztec basketball student section, called “The Show” was recently voted the Number-One rooting section in the country, along with their mascot, Monty Montezuma who was named the Number-One mascot in the country.   Our club member Carlos Gutierrez spent 13-years in the role of Monty Montezuma and still does a cameo appearance at the annual football homecoming game.
  • George Wahab and Ron Spelman have an upcoming art show at the “L” Street Gallery located in the Omni Hotel downtown this Saturday night, 6-9 PM.  This reporter thought he heard him say there would be a hosted bar there.  George does know how to stimulate attendance.
  • Sally Fuller will be at a meeting at the LJ Woman’s Club Wednesday night, and plans to place a wager with police Chief Shelly Zimmerman on the outcome of the Ohio State/Iowa State football game.  (HMMM.  Illegal gambling with the police chief?)
  • Don Lincoln, our very weary International Chair, is finally back home and attending his first meeting in over a month.   Don’s travel schedule included stops in Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, New Caledonia, Sydney, and an unscheduled trip to Washington D.C.  in the middle of it all. (International Chair sounds like an excellent position to have in our Rotary Club)
  • Don Dewhurst was a fraternity brother of Carl Schroeder.  Don’s grandson completed a 50K run, finishing 5th out of 123 competitors.

IMG_6071

  • On Friday, October 30th, La Jolla’s Riford Community Center  honored our own Lee Vida  for his tireless community involvement and dedication.  Proud Rotarians, Cindy Greatrex, David Shaw, Deb Plotkin, Cindy Goodman, Sally Fuller and Lora Fisher attended to support Lee and see him receive his award. Congrats, Lee!

IMG_6076

  • Claire Reiss’s granddaughter turned 12 years old on Halloween.  She is the “apple” of Claire’s eye.

IMG_0204

  • Mark Dibella spent four days in Mexico recently, two of them in the hotel stairwell, waiting out the Category-Five Hurricane Patricia that struck Mexico while he was there.

Announcements:

IMG_0208

  • Laurnie Durisoe says it’s time again for our annual service to the USO Thanksgiving Dinner.  She has two shifts available this year, 9a-12noon for setting up, and 12-3 PM for servers.  Contact Laurnie to help out.
  • Charles Hartford announced our 24th Tijuana home build will take place on Nov. 14, involving the La Jolla HS Interact Club, Rotarians, and parents.  Charles needs hygiene items – soaps, toothpaste, tissues, etc., donated to take down to Tijuana for the family of the new home. Bring your items to the next meeting and Charles will take charge.
  • Ellen Kardashian needs “Silent Auction” items – such as gift cards for restaurants or salons — for the Rotary Holiday party she’s chairing on December 1st at the La Valencia.  Remember, we’ll be dark for lunch that day. Contact Ellen at Ellen.Kardashian@stewart.com

 “What’s My Line?”

President Lora called up Russell King, Eileen Jolly, and Charles Hartford to play “What’s My Line.”

FullSizeRender 3

The questions were:

–who wanted to be a ballerina at age 3?

–who had a paper route at age 10?

–who was present in Berlin when the wall came down?

IMG_0203   FullSizeRender 2

Claire Reese was asked to identify who did what, a very tough task.  Not surprisingly, Charles was the ballet-dancing wannabe, Eileen was the paper girl, and Russell tore down the Berlin Wall and still has a piece of it on his desk.

“Who Am I ” – Ellen Kardashian

Ellen Kardashian gave her “Who Am I”.  She is a native Californian, who, as a teenage mother, moved to Santa Clarita Valley to raise her daughter.  While living there, she began working in real estate, eventually becoming the owner of a real estate company.  Fourteen-years later, she moved to Beverly Hills and entered the title insurance business.  She met and married Robert Kardashian four-years later, and after his passing became President and CFO of Movie Tunes Inc., selling the company 1½ years later.    Ellen now resides in Carlsbad and works in La Jolla.  She relocated here so she could be closer to her daughter, an engineer in the fire department, and her two granddaughters.  She likes to travel, enjoys music, opera, dance, concerts, live sports, and golf, plus her two Pomeranians, and La Jolla Rotary.  Her top vacation choice is  Lake Como in Italy.   Ellen closed with her favorite saying,         “ Treat others as you would like to be treated”, certainly words to live by.

Speaker: Shawn Briley, Manager of La Jolla Library

Bill Boehm introduced the speaker, Shawn Briley, Manager of the La Jolla Library. He noted that San Diego is a leader in the biotech field, ranking with top cities such as San Francisco, Boston, and Cambridge. Capitalizing on that, the Library has embarked on a new program to provide community access to biotechnology.  The goal is to make science a part of everyday life.  They have created a Level-One science laboratory, which is equivalent to a high-school science lab, including 3D printing capability.   The lab is staffed with volunteers, some from local biotech firms such as Wet Lab, The Salk Institute, and Scripps, and post-docs from UCSD.  One surprising benefit has been that teenagers have become reenergized to go to the library.   The library also stocks all the latest best sellers and has access to other local libraries’ books, which they will order for you, free of charge.

November 2015 Edition

give-thanks-p001

 Saying Thanks:

When I was 20 years old, I flew to Israel for a semester abroad. The moment we landed, all the passengers onboard burst into applause. I’d never seen such a thing. The man next to me, an elderly Hasid, sensed my bewilderment.

“This is to say thanks,” he murmured.

“For what?”

“For the miracle of safe passage to the promised land.” He looked at me for a long moment. “It is a miracle, don’t you think?”

I don’t remember much about that semester. But this exchange has haunted me for nearly three decades. I’m still taken aback by the towering ignorance of my response.

After all, an entire book of the Bible is dedicated to the story of how the Jews struggled to reach Israel. It took them 40 years of wandering in the desert and 10 angrily dispatched commandments. Those who reached the modern state of Israel often did so only after escaping, or surviving, years of persecution, including the horrors of the Holocaust.
