A Few Highlights from our Club Meeting:

wh-4p-rgb

  • Welcome and Introductions: President Lora Fisher called to order the 3,325th meeting of the Rotary Club of La Jolla, and the 13th of our Rotary year.
  • Invocation: Mike Sedloff provided a thoughtful invocation
  • Pledge: Craig Schniepp led a spirited Pledge
  • Song: Ron Spelman was recruited by President Lora to do the song, and when she noted that Ron had just celebrated a birthday, we all sang him “Happy Birthday”.  Exactly which birthday remains a secret.

Visitors:

President Lora Fisher and Fellow Club Members Welcomed:

  • President Lora introduced returning visitor, Wade Aschbrenner.
  • Bob Pecora introduced his new associate, Brian Cline, who also happens to be his cousin. Bob proclaimed “Brian got his good looks from Bob’s side of the family”. Reporter’s note; Brian got luckier than Bob.
  • Jane Reldan also brought her medical student, Evelyn Nelson, who has graced us with her presence several times.

President’s Time

President Lora once again hosted the game show, “What’s My Line”, inviting John Trifiletti, Bill Burch, and Pat Stouffer to come forward and participate.

One participant exhibited such incredible intelligence as a child that he was immediately promoted to 1st grade, bypassing kindergarten. Another won a belt buckle for riding a bull as a young man, and the third played volleyball with Ozzie Nelson at age seven.

Mark Christopher was asked to interview the three candidates and match the deeds with the doers.

His guesses: John played volleyball with Ozzie Nelson, Pat rode the bull, and Bill skipped kindergarten. He got one out of three, correctly guessing John, but failed to appreciate and recognize Pat’s early intellectual powers, and Bill’s rodeo/cowboy background.

Happy Bucks:

  • Mike and Janice Sedloff celebrated the wedding of their daughter in Hawaii on September 6th. Fortunately, all the hurricanes that were threatening missed the island.

IMG_0183

  • Claire Reiss was afforded the opportunity to contribute to the club for having her photo in the La Jolla Light, featuring her at an event at the Athenaeum.
  • Mark Christopher donated $20.00 for is using John Hoss’s Padres tickets for tonight’s game.
  • Claude Rosinsky is leaving for Rome.
  • Don Lincoln, recently returned from London on a theatre tour, is now preparing to leave for Sydney. He is apparently taking his position as International Committee Chair very seriously. It is a grueling position, but he seems to be holding up well.

IMG_0184

  • Gwyn Jones, announced the Salvation Army “Changed by the Bell” Kettle Kick Off Benefit, November 20, 5 to 6:30 PM. It will be held at the Trellis Garden Grille, Town and Country Resort. Actor Corbin Bernsen is the special guest speaker. Tree lighting at Fashion Valley Mall to follow. More details Call Major Gwyn Jones 303 552 7278.

Announcements:

Mark Christopher, Lora Fisher, Cal Mann, Ken King, Bill Burch, Will Burch, Heidi Creekmur, Cindy Goodman and our fearless Rotary International Foundation Leader, Will Creekmur

  • Will Creekmur hosted our “Strike Out Polio” event last Saturday at Kearny Mesa Bowl, with a District goal of raising $1500.00 for polio eradication.   He actually raised $4231.00, CONGRATULATIONS WILL, job well done, and a good time was had by all. President Lora noted that some bowlers did well, while others not so well but it was a fun time with fellow club members. Cal Mann made an appearance and showed off his bowling skills. Rotary International is matching any donations, which count toward Paul Harris recognition, and it’s not too late to take advantage of this offer. Contact Will Creekmur for more details. Will may be reached at williamcreekmur@gmail.com or at 808-681-9918. You can check out more photos below!
  • Jonathan Moffatt is conducting LEAD interviews with Muirlands and Bishop’s 8th grade students on Wednesday and/ or Thursday Oct. 7/8 during the morning and noon hours, and is looking for volunteers. Contact Jonathan if interested at jmoffat@alignedadvisors.com
  • President Lora will be convening the Nominating Committee consisting of all Past Presidents on Tuesday, October 6, 11a.m. on the patio at the La Valencia Hotel. It’s time to complete the selections for next year’s board.
  • John Trifiletti announced the “Fireside Chat” for new members, a Red Badge requirement, which will be held at the home of Orrin and Karen Gabsch on October 13, 7p.m.

  • “Our own Davis Cracroft was featured on the PBS News Hour this week discussing the impact of Medicaid expansion and the strains to California’s health care system.  Unlike Davis’ past excuses for missing lunch at the La V, this shows him actually doing something related to medicine. Rotarians look forward to giving him proper recognition for his great work and being on national television!  Check out the interview here!

Speaker: Cindy Stankowsky

Speaker Cindy Stankowsky, from the San Diego Archaeological Center in Escondido, was introduced by Ken King.   She told the story of Madame Katherine Tingley, proponent of Theosophy, who founded Lomaland on Point Loma in the early 20th century. Stankowsky said Theosophy grew out of peoples’ interest in spiritualism and the occult. By 1917 there were 500 residents at Lomaland, 250 of whom were children, all housed separately from their parents.   Mr. Albert Spalding, he of the sporting goods company, was a resident and big financial supporter, until the Depression struck. By 1941 the population of Lomaland had dwindled to 170, and the property was foreclosed on. The Theosophical Society is now headquartered in Pasadena, with about 40,000 members worldwide. Other notable members of the Theosophical Society have included Thomas Edison, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, L. Frank Baum of Wizard of Oz fame, and the King himself, Elvis.

Untitled1

Lomaland is now the site of Point Loma Nazarene University, and Albert Spalding’s original home (pictured above) is now Mieras Hall, the campus administration building.

Stankowsky, an archaeologist, says she has recovered many artifacts at the site. Interesting note: before becoming involved in archaeology, Stankowsky was a San Diego City Paramedic.

The answer to last week’s contest is David Shaw (joined by his beautiful wife Reesey) in Borobudur, Central Java, Indonesia. Bill Burch was the first of many to correctly identify David as the Rotarian in the photograph, but no one guessed the right location (c’mon Rotarians, we’ve all visited Borobudur at one time or another).

Please keep the photographs coming, recent or not, in far distance places or not . . . La Jolla Rotarians go to interesting places and do interesting things, and it is fun (and sometimes challenging) for us to keep up with each other’s doings.

Why Mentors Matter

We Americans like to think of ourselves as “rugged individualists” – in the image of the lone cowboy riding toward the setting sun, opening the frontier. But at least as accurate a symbol of our national story is the wagon train, with its mutual aid among a community of pioneers. Throughout our history, a pendulum has slowly swung between the poles of individualism and community, both in our public philosophy and in our daily lives. In the past half century we have witnessed, for better or worse, a giant swing toward the individualist pole in our culture, society, and politics. At the same time, researchers have steadily piled up evidence of how important social context, social institutions, and social networks – in short, our communities – remain for our well-being and our kids’ opportunities.

Social scientists often use the term social capital to describe social connectedness – that is, informal ties to family, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances; involvement in civic associations, religious institutions, athletic teams, volunteer activities; and so on. Social capital has repeatedly been shown to be a strong predictor of well-being both for individuals and for communities. Community bonds and social networks have powerful effects on health, happiness, educational success, economic success, public safety, and (especially) child welfare. However, like financial capital and human capital, social capital is distributed unevenly, and differences in social connections contribute to the youth opportunity gap.

Lora Fisher called sponsor Sally Fuller and Membership Service Chair John Trifiletti to the podium for the presentation of the Blue Badge to Claire Reese. Lora spoke of Claire’s tremendous community spirit and willingness to not only help out, but to lead – Rotary traits Claire has shown during her short time with Rotary.

Happy Bucks:

  • Jane Reldan shared a quote from the Dalai Lama: “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible”, and to mark this most holy time of the year in the Jewish faith made a $120 donation.
  • Mark Christopher shared his daughter’s lifelong struggle with a birth defect and thanked his connection to La Jolla Rotarian. Claude Rosinsky for putting him in touch with a surgeon in Florida where his daughter is undergoing a new, promising and less invasive treatment.
  • John Trifiletti was called on twice to pay Happy Bucks for appearing in the papers.  Members were surprised when they found it was for an obituary!  The club could see that John is alive and well but on further investigation we discovered that Trif had given the eulogy for his long time friend and mentor Author Hughes.  Click this link to read more about Author Hughes.

Announcements:

  • Bill Burch reminded members of the upcoming Rotary Foundation Gala, “Millions for Hope,” on October 17. It will be a rare opportunity to meet Rotary International’s 2015-2016 President, K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran, who will be keynote speaker. You can register for the event here.
  • Will Creekmur reminded everyone that the “Strike-Out Polio” fundraiser is this Saturday, September 26 at Kearny Mesa Lanes, 2:00-4:00pm. Lora encouraged Rotary bowlers to share “Service Above Self(ies)” during the festivities.
  • John Trifiletti let members know of the upcoming Fireside Chat, which will be on October 13th at the home of Orrin and Karen Gabsch. Start time will be 7pm.
  • Charles Hartford gave an Interact Club update: student members at La Jolla High participated in the PeddletheCause fundraiser this past weekend, and will help out at Taste of La Jolla coming up. The next Tijuana home-build project has also been tentatively scheduled for November 14.

Speaker Mark Neville

Speaker: Mark Neville, San Diego Bowl Games Association

“Forget about the Chargers! Think Aztecs, think Holiday Bowl!” said Ken King who introduced speaker Mark Neville, executive director of the San Diego Bowl Game Association. Neville gave an overview of the Association, whose mission is to generate tourism, economic growth and civic pride through San Diego’s two Bowl games: The Holiday Bowl and the San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) Poinsettia Bowl. In addition to these positive impacts, Neville described Bowl games as the most exciting football to watch. Not only are these high-scoring down-to-the-wire games, but who doesn’t love seeing the 850-lb American Flag draped across the field, spectacular half-time fireworks, and marching bands?

A few stats Neville shared:

  • Of 37 Holiday Bowl match-ups, 22 were decided in the final 2 minutes of the game.
  • BYU has played in more Holiday Bowl games than any other team: 11 times.
  •  Games are scheduled during slow tourism periods and generate $730 million for the region.

Two new developments this year: The Holiday Bowl (December 30) is taking the leap from the Big 12 to the Big 10, so expect big-name contenders in future line-ups. And this year’s SDCCU Poinsettia Bowl (December 23) will have the most spectacular fireworks display ever.

If you are interested in purchasing Holiday Bowl Tickets, email Mark Neville at mneville@sdbowlgames.com

PAKISTAN’S PROGRESS: SNAPSHOTS FROM THE POLIO CAMPAIGN

Nearly 90 percent of the world’s polio cases last year occurred in Pakistan. But the country is making dramatic progress in its quest to eradicate the disease: Cases are down by almost 70 percent to date compared with 2014, owing partly to military interventions that year in Taliban-controlled North Waziristan, which have allowed vaccinators to reach hundreds of thousands of children who were previously inaccessible. Improved government leadership, the introduction of inactivated polio vaccine in high-risk districts, and vaccinations at transit points such as railways, airports, and bus stops also have played a significant role. “While Pakistan continues to face obstacles in its journey to polio eradication, we are excited about the current progress being made,” says Mike McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee, who met with Rotarians and government officials during a visit to the country in June.

When asked to demonstrate, she deferred to Gwyn Jones, who after a few squeaks and squawks produced a credible sound.
  • Claire Reiss was happy to announce that her daughter won the La Jolla Rough Water Swim in her age group.
  • Mark DiBella said the current rain storm produced only 6 leaks in the hotel vs 26 a year ago, and he was very happy about that.

Reaching $15-Million, and “Driving Miss Betty”

  • Bill Burch asked District Governor Kurth to join him in encouraging members to attend “Millions for Hope,” Rotary Foundation’s Gala on October 17. It will be a rare opportunity to meet Rotary International’s 2015-2016 President, K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran, who will be keynote speaker. The goal of the campaign is to raise $15 million to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. Janice said the “big reveal” on the amount raised will be made at the Gala.
  • Will Creekmur reminded everyone of the October 26 bowling fundraiser, “Strike-Out Polio,” at Kearny Mesa Lanes. There is still time to sign up.
  • Pat Stouffer let members know of the La Jolla Rotary Foundation committee meeting on Wednesday, September 16 at 5:00 pm in the Veranda Room. Year-end financials will be reviewed. All are welcome to attend.
  • Charles Hartford recounted his muggy but productive morning spent in an un-air-conditioned biology classroom at La Jolla High. It was the year’s first meeting of the Interact Club, and 40 students attended.
  • Sally Fuller handed out Rotary Cards to assist members in explaining “What Is Rotary.”
  • Lora Fisher shared her experiences of “Driving Miss Betty” (Betty Dow) to and from Rotary, and hearing Betty’s many wonderful stories along the way. Betty took the mike and shared one such anecdote – a case of mistaken identity at a Paris museum involving Betty, another woman’s husband, and two matching dresses. Completely G-Rated, and very funny.
Betty tells a tale from her travels.

  • Lora thanked past presidents Kate Adams and Ted Rutter for taking the presidential helm while she was vacationing in Ireland. Thank-you gifts for the two are forthcoming (still in U.S. Customs) and will be presented at the next meeting. In the meantime, Lora asked Kate to spin the “Wheel of Misfortune.” Lora paid the tab, adding $100 to the Club treasury.

Speaker: Mark Sickman, Playwright

“Difficult Position of a San Diego Playwright”

So you’re working on a play, San Diego is a great theater town, seems like a natural fit for a San Diego playwright, yes? Hmmm, not so much. Local playwright Mark Sickman led Rotarians through the travails of getting produced and the need for as much creativity off the page as on. As with many areas of the arts, local fame often finds you only after you’ve made your mark in the big city. Mark’s latest play, a musical titled “ROPE,” was a top award-winner at one of the largest festival’s in New York City, and is making its way to San Diego in March 2016, where it can be seen at the Tenth Avenue Theater in East Village. Mark’s advice to budding playwrights struggling to find a producer:

  • Shop your play outside of your area.
  • Research who is looking for new plays, and check their mission to see if it’s a good fit.
  • Join organizations that can be helpful, such as Dramatist Guild and Theater Resource Unlimited.
  • Enter contests and festivals – often a “side door” to getting your play produced.

Technology: To Please in a Pod(Cast)

When I was a college student in Wisconsin in the 1970s, those of us who worked at the 10-watt radio station hoped our signal would reach not only the 1,500 students on the Beloit College campus and the 35,000 residents of the town of Beloit but also the people in the cars and trucks passing by on the interstate 3 miles to the east – and possibly, late at night, the 150,000 who lived in the bustling metropolis of Rockford, Ill., 20 miles to the south.

Some of us hoped to get jobs in radio after we graduated, and there was even talk about starting our own station. But that would have required securing approval from the Federal Communications Commission to purchase a license, assuming one was even available, and raising an enormous amount of capital.

In other words, it was all a pipe dream.

Fast-forward four decades. That dream is now possible, at a far lower cost – namely, the amount of time and effort you are willing to put into it.

Speaker Tom Wheeler: “A New Era of Development: The Social Enterprise Movement in East Africa”

Tom Wheeler, lifetime La Jolla Resident, La Jolla High School graduate, mentee of Cal Mann, former Interacter, and Riford Scholar each year at Santa Clara University spoke on “A New Era of Development: The Social Enterprise Movement in East Africa”. Introduced by his father, Doug Wheeler. Tom is an Environmental Science Major and Entrepreneurship Minor. Early in his school experience, Tom described being unhappy with the “Us vs. Them” attitude that was prevalent between NGO’s and for-profit corporations. He wants to see Sustainability in a corporate business model. He spent four months in Copenhagen, where he learned how Denmark is committing to be Carbon Neutral by 2020. He is now working with the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University, and is currently participating in a Fellowship in Social Entrepreneurship, which has consisted of one prep course, taken in the spring, two months in residence in Uganda and Rwanda collecting data and now in a vocational course producing deliverables. He spent his time in Uganda and Rwanda interviewing a variety of people engaged around the business of a Social Entrepreneurship Company called JIBU, a water purification business. JIBU franchises water stations in Uganda and Rwanda to provide affordable, clean drinking water to people who are  now collecting it from questionable sources. Many residents often need to boil the water before drinking, still others may ingest it untreated and face a high risk of disease. Tom eloquently described how the company hopes to create a sustainable and expandable source of clean water,  noting such a successful business model would also have huge social impact. He answered a variety of questions from the audience, displaying a level of poise and self assurance which many felt equaled far more seasoned speakers.

The winner of last weeks contest was once again David Shaw! He correctly guessed the young topless lad was none other than Cal Mann, and the photo was taken at Prince William Sound, in the great state of Alaska. Great job David!

Culture: The Fun in Dysfunction

Last month, as virtually anyone with a television knows, Jon Stewart retired after 16 years as host of “The Daily Show.” Stewart was technically a comedian. But he was also, in the judgment of the New York Times and about half the country, “the most trusted man in America.”

I spent many years watching Stewart and his evil twin Stephen Colbert, who played a conservative pundit so convincingly that it was hard to believe he wouldn’t have had a shot at the GOP presidential nomination. Like many Americans distressed by the corruption of our political and media classes, I took great comfort in their remarkable ability to convert my anguish into laughter. Both men functioned as cultural critics of the highest order, inheritors of a comic legacy that dates back to Will Rogers and Mark Twain.

But a few years ago, I began to question my allegiance to Stewart and Colbert. To be clear, this had nothing to do with how much I enjoyed their programs. It had to do with my own sense that watching them made me complicit in a rather cynical arrangement. Simply put, I was choosing to laugh at our broken institutions rather than working to fix them.

A Note From Katie King-Acosta:

I just want to say THANK YOU for the generous baby gift from the Rotary Club of La Jolla.  My husband and I greatly appreciate it and will probably end up using it to purchase more diapers! I would like to introduce you to Baby Enrique King Acosta. Born August 29th, 2015.

Acting President Ted Rutter with Who Am I Speaker Craig Schneipp

A Few Highlights from our Club Meeting: wh-4p-rgb

  • Welcome and Introductions: Acting (and former) President Ted Rutter introduced the meeting, teasing President Lora Fisher about “bailing on her responsibilities”, after pointing out that when  he started in the club, Dick Woltman was absent for much of the year, and he thought the Presidency was a “rotating job”!  Each of the past Rotary Presidents who was present at today’s meeting was queried as to where they did their International Rotary Meeting prior to their Presidency. Quite a variety!:
    • David Weston: Mexico City
    • Ken King: (Will be going to) Seoul, Korea
    • Bill Burch: Birmingham, England (also went to Paris and saw the Eiffel Tower!)
    • Lee Vida: Chicago, IL (his home town!)
    • Davis Cracroft: Originally scheduled to go to New Orleans, but Katrina happened, and he ended up in Salt Lake City (his home town!)
    • Pat Stouffer: Lisbon, Portugal (with extensive travel in Spain)
    • Jeanne Cherbeneau: When president of Club in Northern California, Singapore and China!
    • Ted Rutter (our acting President!): Los Angeles (his home town!)

Who Am I? — Criag Schneipp

Craig described being the son and grandson of La Jolla Rotarians (his father was a past-president and his grandfather, Craig Cole, was a founding member of the club. Craig was a graduate of the entire La Jolla Public School System (La Jolla Elementary, Muirlands and La Jolla High). He went to UCLA for college and returned to La Jolla to join his Dad in Cole’sMoving and Storage. The business was sold when his dad became ill. He then moved to North County, doing home mortgages and ultimately began doing Real Estate for the past 10 years. He and Rebecca arethe parents of a daughter and two sons. Craig’s greatest accomplishment is raising his children, of whom he is justifiably proud.

Speaker: Charles Hartford “Think Inside the Box”

Rotary Club member Charles Hartford, the ground assault commander responsible for getting over 2,000 people to the site in Iraq for the rescue of Jessica Lynch, presented  “Taking Care of our Troops”. After 9/11, a woman who regretted that she was too old to sign up for military service, took on the responsibility for launching Operation Gratitude, a project that has now provided over 1.2 Million care packages for active duty servicemen and women, consisting of necessities, such as soap, shaving cream, razors, etc.. This project is ongoing, and it was suggested that The Rotary Club of La Jolla participate by providing funds for additional care packages.  He also described the provision of the ultimate care package, delivering Jessica Lynch back to her family in West Virginia. He also referred to the much more painful “care package” of delivering an American Flag with white gloved hands to the parents or widows/widowers of Service people killed in action.

Charles also spoke of the operation to rescue Jessica Lynch, showing video footage from the operation. He also reported that during the operation, the team was tipped off that there were remains of American Service people buried in a field adjacent to the hospital where Jessica Lynch was found. They spend an additional 4 ½ hours digging up the remains by hand (because they hadn’t been tipped off in advance to bring shovels).

David Shaw was the winner of last weeks Where In The World contest.  He correctly identified yours truly, Susan Stevens at Macchu Pichu. Other correct answers were quickly given by Pat Stouffer and Cindy Goodman.  All three told me it was an easy guess.  Perhaps I should make the game a little harder?  Hint for this week: Once a Rotarian always a Rotarian.

Polio: The Rotarian Conversation with Aseefa Bhutto Zardari

Before her family was forced into exile, before her mother was assassinated, before her father became president, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari was known for something simpler, but in some ways equally powerful: In 1994, she became the first child in Pakistan to receive the oral polio vaccine, as part of the country’s first National Immunization Day. Benazir Bhutto, then prime minister, gave the drops to her daughter herself, a compelling endorsement of the nascent campaign.

“I was a baby at the time, so I don’t remember it,” says Bhutto Zardari, now 22. “But the moment was an inspirational one for the nation, and encouraged women to believe that polio drops were and are safe.”

In 1988, at age 35, Benazir Bhutto became the first woman elected to lead a Muslim country. She was assassinated in 2007, just months after she had returned to Pakistan after almost nine years in exile. But Aseefa Bhutto Zardari – whose father, Asif Ali Zardari, served as president of Pakistan from 2008 to 2013 – is carrying on her mother’s work. As a Rotary polio ambassador, she meets with officials, visits schools, and talks with families of health workers who were killed while working to vaccinate children.

Bhutto Zardari has raised the profile of the polio eradication campaign in Pakistan and around the world. She writes about the topic for the Huffington Post and joined Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko onstage at the 2012 Global Citizen Festival in New York City’s Central Park. On Twitter, with more than half a million followers, she encourages people in Pakistan to support ending polio and chastises those who stand in the way. In April, she invited two other prominent women in Pakistani politics to join her in the polio eradication effort, a move that garnered media coverage across the country.

In 1994, the year Bhutto Zardari received those first drops of vaccine, Pakistan had an estimated 35,000 cases of polio. As of 10 June, 24 cases had been reported in the country in 2015. Bhutto Zardari, who is completing a master’s degree in global health and development in London, talked to us about ending polio in Pakistan, her future in politics, and prospects for peace in her country.
