SAN DIEGO STUDENTS TACKLE VACCINE CONTROVERSY

A group of teenage journalism students in suburban San Diego were in the early stages of a new project – an educational film funded by a Rotary grant – when their teacher’s phone rang. A prominent blogger had caught wind of what they were doing from a local news story, and wasn’t pleased. The fledgling film came under fire almost overnight as ripples of protest spread through the blogosphere. With calls pouring in before shooting had even begun, the advisers considered halting the project, questioning whether it would be worth the controversy surrounding its subject matter: vaccines.

“I’ve been involved with immunization initiatives for over 20 years now,” says Amnon Ben-Yehuda, one of the San Diego Rotary members who had contacted the Emmy-winning broadcast journalism program at Carlsbad High School about a health education project, initially conceived as a 15-minute film about the immune system, in 2011. “We knew there were people out there who were against vaccines, but they didn’t represent a force we had to deal with until this project.”

Ben-Yehuda chairs a Rotary districtwide committee that works with local health agencies to increase vaccination coverage. He’s seen vaccine-preventable diseases affect even affluent neighborhoods, where the barrier isn’t access to vaccines but skepticism about their safety. “For about the last 10 years, we’ve recognized that the important thing is education,” he says. “We began to realize that we were repeating the same message and not getting anywhere. Young people have to learn about immunization before they become parents, so we started working with schools.”

Speaker: September 8th, 2015: Thomas Wheeler: A New Era of Development: My Journey Through the Social Enterprise Movement in East Africa

image2

As an Interact Alumni from La Jolla High School and a current recipient of the Riford Scholarship at Santa Clara University, Rotary continues to support me throughout my personal and professional development. I wish to show my appreciation by sharing my experiences in Uganda and Rwanda this summer working for a social enterprise named Jibu. With its innovative decentralized filtration model and wholesale pricing, Jibu is empowering African entrepreneurs to provide radically affordable purified water to communities throughout Africa. After 2 months of conducting field research with Jibu in Kampala and Kigali I will be reflecting on my journey to social entrepreneurship through my Santa Clara University fellowship, provide a walk through of Jibu’s innovative business model and growth targets, detail the goals and products of my research, share my personal insight from East Africa, and discuss my plans for the future.

Speaker: August 18th: Mac McLaughlin: USS Midway

Unknown

The USS Midway arrived in San Diego in January, 2004, following a 10 year battle to gain approval from the Navy, Port and Coastal Commission. Midway opened its brow to the public in June 2004, and has since become the most visited historic ship in the world. Over 1 million guests come aboard this tribute to San Diego’s proud Navy heritage annually, and we host over 250 special events and 400 military ceremonies. That’s WHAT the Midway has become; San Diego Rotary will hear WHO We Are.

Mac McLaughlin is President & Chief Executive Officer of the USS Midway Museum. He was hired as the Chief Operating Officer in December 2003, one month prior to the Midway’s arrival in San Diego and has been the chief executive throughout the building of the Museum.

Prior to joining the Midway, Mac retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral in August 2003. During his career as a Naval Aviator, he served as a Commanding Officer of a helicopter squadron and Naval Air Station. He served two tours of duty in the Pentagon on the Chief of Naval Operations Staff and served Flag tours as Commander, Naval Air Reserve Force and Naval Reserve Forces Command.

Mac graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1972 where he was an All-American and Captain of the track team. He holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Troy State University. He is married to the former Norah Anne Flynn of Chula Vista and they have two children, Kathleen and Stephen.

Rotary Hootenanny!

Tuesday’s meeting began with a decidedly down-home vibe when President Lora Fisher introduced Grammy Award-winning banjo player Alison Brown. The talented performer delivered an informative and fun history of the five-string banjo, while demonstrating the evolution of strumming and picking techniques with a few favorite tunes. Calling the banjo “America’s instrument” while noting its African origins, Alison claims it is one of the easiest instruments to learn to play. To make her point, two young “volunteers” joined her for a banjo finale with a little singing, picking and excellent “hoof work” by the youngest of the trio.

Giving a moving presentation complete with film footage of the parting of the Red Sea from the Ten Commandments, League House Picnic Event Chair Kevin Quinn did not overstate the apocalyptic challenges that faced last Sunday’s picnic. That’s right, it rained. But no spirits were dampened as residents enjoyed the “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” theme, feasted on hamburgers, hot dogs and Cracker Jacks, and won a variety of prizes in a 10th inning raffle. Bob and Pat Schroeder delivered the opening pitch with a trivia contest on the life and times of baseball great Ty Cobb.

Speaker: Claude Anthony (C.A.) Marengo

President of the Village Merchant Association C.A. Marengo informed members of the Association’s role in the community and current issues. The Association is a Business Improvement District (BID), supported by La Jolla merchants through a voluntary self-tax. In addition to participating in La Jolla events and helping promote local businesses, the Association represents and advocates for local merchants to the City of San Diego. C.A. noted the following work of the Association:

  • Continuing the “Sparkle & Shine” initiative spearheaded by Nancy Warwick to keep sidewalks clean
  • Hosting a successful 4th of July fireworks event
  • Advocating removal of the Planned District Ordinance (PDO), which the Association believes is outdated and defeats the goal of keeping La Jolla a “walkable community.”

July 2015 Edition

July-Cover

K.R. Ravindran’s life was molded by family, country, and Rotary. Serving as Rotary president is his way of giving back to each of them.

Before he gives a speech, K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran doesn’t like flowery, adulatory introductions. They make him uncomfortable. The 2015-16 Rotary president would rather keep a low profile and share the credit. If it were up to him, you probably wouldn’t even be reading this article.

Negotiating Days of Tranquility during the Sri Lankan civil war so that health workers could administer drops of polio vaccine? Although it was on his desk that the agreement landed, he says, a lot of people worked to make that happen. Rebuilding 23 tsunami-damaged schools for 14,000 children? He merely led the committee. Taking a label-printing business from a small outfit operating in a space the size of a garage to a global powerhouse in the packaging business that has helped change the value-added tea industry in his country? Well, he simply happened to be in the right place at the right time.

“I’m sometimes introduced as a self-made man,” says Ravindran, a member of the Rotary Club of Colombo. “You’ve got to be utterly egocentric to believe you are self-made. Each one of us is made because so many people helped us become who we are.

One of the reasons I work so much for Rotary is that I have been helped by so many people, and often you never have a chance to reciprocate,” he explains. “The only way you can is by helping others. When the people I help ask me, ‘What can I do?’ I say, ‘Go and help someone else in return.’”

For Ravindran, paying it forward isn’t a fad, it’s a way of life. His theme for this Rotary year, Be a Gift to the World, also summarizes his personal philosophy.

Who am I threesome (1)
In keeping with her goal to make Rotary the “best place you could be” on Tuesdays at noon, President Lora Fisher started the proceedings with a dash of fun – a guessing game that had club members try to match a unique achievement or experience to each of three Rotarians. From left: Ed Mracek (skied the same downhill run as Olympian Gold Medalist Franz Klammer in Innsbruck, Austria), District Governor Janice Kurth (hiked the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in one day), and Mark Christopher (swam with dozens of sharks and a 55-foot whale). Who knew!
A Few Highlights from our Club Meeting:
Welcome and Introductions: President Lora Fisher
Invocation: Bob Teaff
Pledge: David Shaw
Song: Sally Fuller led the members in “America the Beautiful.” Coincidentally, Bob Teaff’s invocation focused on passages from this same song.

  • Ted Rutter, announcing that he and wife Carol are headed to the South of France for their next anniversary
  • Gwyn Jones, announcing his children’s recent scholastic and artistic awards
  • Deb Plotkin, who in her role at U-Touch, will be traveling to Uganda, England, Baltimore, and New York, visiting Rotary Clubs along the way.

Sally Fuller gets fined.
Caught on the pages of the La Jolla Light, Sally Fuller paid the price of celebrity.
 Speaker Janice Kurth

Janice Kurth, 5340 District Governor of Rotary

Janice’s presentation — titled “What Does Rotary Do?” – began with a recounting of her own Rotary journey, beginning 11 years ago when she was invited by a neighbor to join the Rotary Club of Del Mar. An MD by training, Janice was immediately impressed by Rotary’s worldwide commitment to the eradication of polio. Her service involvement with the Del Mar club began as a mentor to at-risk teens and grew to global dimensions when Janice led a healthcare exchange to Kenya, where she recalls how local Rotarians helped smooth the way. “Rotary makes the whole world our home,” she said, and it “connects people from the heart.” Her most memorable experiences have been about the people she’s met and the relationships she’s formed. “Make Rotary personal to you,” she concluded. In the Q&A that followed, Janice offered these remarks:

  • Challenge ourselves to embody this year’s Rotary theme: Be a Gift to the World.
  • Her vision as District Governor is “to inspire people to be passionate about Rotary,” while making Rotary “fun.”
  • Her goals include raising $100,000 district-wide for Polio Plus and increasing net district membership by 60 new Rotarians by the end of her tenure.

Janice also encouraged support of the Rotary Foundation’s $15 million campaign, Millions for Hope, noting that $14 million has already been raised.

President Lora’s Project For Our Club

Last year we sent out a questionnaire for members to complete regarding our strategic plan. Many members noted that they wanted to see a new International project for the club.
In researching this, I looked into Rotary’s focus, which is to “advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty”.The project I would like our club to undertake can literally change and save lives.Don Lincoln assisted in researching and vetting this project, noting the importance of having funds go to the intend purpose.  We also like the project because of its continuity with Past Presidents Ted Rutter and Pat Stouffer “chickens” involvement. We are going to help the children and people of Haiti. We will visit the project in February.  The exact dates will be posted in the next few weeks.
I’m going to ask you to give your greatest gift – your time and personal efforts to meet the needs
of those who live in poverty, hopelessness and facing despair in Haiti. You can Read More about this Project at Hopestartinternational.com
