January 22, 2013 Speaker: Fallbrook Rotarian Don Foulkes – WWII Bombardier, Europe, German POW

B-24 BomberDon Foulkes….Born in 1922  and raised in Peabody, Massachusetts (next to the witch town of Salem).

  • Attended Northeastern University in Boston commencing 1940. Education  interrupted  in  late  1943  as called up  for  active  WWII  duty,  into  Army Air Corps ( now..U.S. Air Force ) .  Served  through  the  end  of  the  war  in 1945.
  • In service  was  trained  and  served  as  a  bombardier  on B-24  bombers  with  frontline  service  out  of  Italy.
  • Shot  down  on  28th  mission. Spent 7  months  as  guest  of  Hitler.
  • At  war’s  conclusion, reentered  college  in fall  of  ’45  and  graduated  in  the  spring of 47  with  a BSEE ( Bachelor of  Science in Electrical Engineering ) .
  • Work  career:   Hired  by  General Electric  Company.  Was  transferred  in 1951 to  the  Los Angeles  area  assigned  to  Electric  Utilities  as  a  sales  engineer  and  eventually  became  District  Manager  with  10  Western  States and  their  Electric  Utilities  as  my  responsibility  for  electrical   Distribution  and Transmission  Products.

  • Chairman  of Lamplighters  Los  Angeles ( Illuminating Engineers Society )
  • Director.. Youth Baseball  league  ( 41  teams..West Covina )
  • Board of Director’s ..South Hills  Country  Club  West  Covina
  • Transferred  to Denver, 1975
  • Transferred  to  Phoenix 1982
  • Retired  in 1987 to   Fallbrook.  Active  in  Community theater. Have  played  many  roles. Built  sets. Wrote  newsletter  for  10  years. Plus  have  written  and  presented  many  monologues .

Present Activities:

  • Have  emceed  many  events  including   three  Nine Eleven Ceremonies.
  • Emceed  Miss  Fallbrook & Miss  Teen  Fallbrook. 2009  through  2012 .
  • Co-chairman of POW Support  Group  through Veterans Administration.
  • Member  of  The Rotary Club of  Fallbrook. A proud member.

 The  real  world:

  • Married  to  Mary  and celebrated  our  64th  wedding  Anniversary May 23, 2012.
  • Happily  living  and  enjoying  life  in  Fallbrook.
